Among the development of the relation between Morocco and Germany, the Minister of State at the German Foreign Ministry, Mr. Miguel Berger, confirmed in a statement obtained by El Portal Diplomatico that “the German Foreign Ministry is observing with great concern the violations against Sahrawi civilians in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.”The German government reiterated also its “firm stance towards the violations of Morocco in Western Sahara”.
The German Foreign Ministry referred to “reports from Western Sahara, according to which Sahrawi civilians and activists are facing discrimination, harassment and judicial follow-ups”.
Commenting on the response of the German Foreign Ministry, the German environmental expert, Omid Nuribor, affirmed that “Germany has not contributed sufficiently to resolve this long conflict.”
As for the representative of the parliamentary bloc of the Free Democratic Party, Alexander Graf Lamsdorf, he stressed that “the Moroccan maneuver aims to increase the pressure, because the new US President, Joe Biden, intends to reverse the decision of his predecessor concerning the sovereignty of Morocco in Western Sahara.”
For her part, Sevim Dagdelen, a member of the Bundestag, called on the German government to “not recognize the illegal Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara and not to bow to the pressures of Rabat.”
Moreover, she stressed that “instead of signing economic agreements and partnership with the Kingdom of Morocco, the German federal government must work actively to ensure the organization of the self-determination referendum t under the aegis of the United Nations.”
